Dignitaries from the Czech Republic and the United States were in Washington, D.C. to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. The student movement in November 1989 led to the collapse of the Communist government and the return of free elections to the central European country.

A packed crowd filled the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. to commemorate Veterans Day with a performance of letters from war.

Several dozen people gathered near Union Station for the annual Columbus Day celebration. The holiday is of special importance to fraternal groups and Italian-Americans, who take pride in Columbus’ achievements. But a few Native Americans protested, saying Columbus Day is nothing to celebrate.
